The Best Prime Rib in San Francisco

For the best Prime Rib in San Francisco, go to The House of Prime Rib located at 1906 VanNess Ave.
The House of Prime Rib has been a San Francisco destination since 1949. As the name suggests, their specialty is Prime Rib. The prime rib is dry-aged then covered in salt and roasted to perfection. The prime rib then arrives at your table in big chrome carts that resemble a big dirigible and carved table side, as shown below:

House of Prime Rib features several warm and cozy dining rooms, that remind you of an old hunting lodge. Below are a few of the dining rooms:

When a city loses a restaurant institution

A San Francisco institution is now dead thanks to the new ownership. The Old Clam House of San Francisco was recently bought by a new owners group that owns Crab House on Pier 39, The Stinking Rose, Boboquivari's, The Franciscan and others. They have single handedly destroyed the previous menu, only to replace it with almost exact replicas of their other overpriced, mediocre at best menus. I went there, not knowing about them being bought, and when we walked, in the place was empty . All the decor which made this place a fun atmosphere...gone. Their signature dish of Mixed Seafood Linguine in a white sauce...gone...replaced by one in a "cioppino" sauce. They offer 4 cuts of Prime Rib, which the smallest cut is $30 and the large is $40...for this, just go to the House of Prime Rib for the same price and they have it mastered. The cheeseburger is $10, $14 if you would like fries.....since when do fries NOT come with a hamburger for dinner? Apparently, judging on the burger, meat barely comes with it as well.  A half-dozen oysters for $13.50? That would be $27 per dozen. All the great dishes that they used to server like the Lazy Mans Ciopinno, Calm Bake, most of the pasta dishes are all gone. Crab Louie?...yep...gone. Mixed Seafood Plate?...gone. They have "Sand Dabs a la Calamari"...what the is that? Calamari is squid not a style of cooking....basically they're just Fried Sand Dabs.....oh and no calamari either. They offer 3 types of fish: Sand Dabs (really?), Salmon, and Basa (a type of catfish). The portions are close to half of what they used to be for the same price. This is a major disappointment. Not sure what they're after here. Whatever the case may be this place has been destroyed. How you get an well known establishment with a steady clientele and redo the entire menu is beyond me. If they really want to succeed they need to bring back the old menu and back off on the tourist trap prices. These are the same dishes that they serve at their other restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, along with the same prices....yes the tourist trap prices can now be found at The Old Clam House on Bayshore Blvd. Here's the Crab House on Pier 39 menu, and now mostly the same one as Old Clam House..compare for yourself: http://www.crabhouse39.../...( also click on The Franciscan link..same dishes). It's a shame when a restaurant group, rolls into an area, and destroys an institution By the way...I had seafood pasta and it was very bland. If we are lucky this place will fail under the new owners and they'll sell to someone that will bring it back to it's old splendor...again if we're lucky. This restaurant was one of San Francisco's oldest restaurants that had a tradition that spanned decades. The tradition is no more and this once San Francisco institution is now gone.
